The Duke’s wax and shave charity fundraiser raised over $2500 for Lifeline WA in March, in memory of Christopher, the son of long-time friend and regular patron Neville Kendrick, who died by suicide in 2015.

Christopher, nicknamed “Kendo”, was a happy guy who loved sports, had studied horticulture and was well respected by his peers, which is why his death at the age of 28 came as such a shock to his parents.

“The loss of my son was the hardest day in my life,” said Mr Kendrick.

“There is not a day that goes by where I don’t ask myself why this happened and why we did not see it.

Men don’t talk a lot about their issues; we are expected to be tough and handle everything – but we build up a lot within ourselves.

His death has definitely brought our family closer together and we appreciate the good times we did have with him.”

The Duke’s Duty Manager, Todd Chineegadoo, who parted with his hair for the event, said it was a great opportunity to draw attention to important work that Lifeline WA does, and support and work with people like Neville in his local community.

“Since I started fundraising for Lifeline WA with this fundraiser event, a number of individuals from my community have approached me and shared their own stories of how they have been personally affected by depression and suicide,” said Mr Chineegadoo.

“I feel that holding events like this within the community are so important to start the conversation about topics people may not otherwise feel comfortable having.”
