14 Nov 2019 WA’s biggest Christmas tree will light up Yagan Square to celebrate the launch of the annual Lights for Lifeline campaign, which aims to give the gift of life to more West Australians. Lifeline WA is on a mission to ‘answer every call’ by training record numbers of crisis centre volunteers to answer calls from the more than 47,000 West Australians who contact Lifeline’s national hotline. Lifeline WA CEO Lorna MacGregor said the number of volunteers had increased from 178 to 200 in the last financial year, and they managed to answer the most calls in the WA centre’s 38 year history. Ms MacGregor said fundraising from the ‘Lights for Lifeline – powered by Synergy’ campaign would help the not-for-profit to answer even more calls, especially during the festive season. “While Christmas is a festive time, it can also be a time of immense stress for people, which can have a negative effect on their mental health and ability to cope. “This could be extra financial pressure, strained family relationships, or loneliness for those who are estranged from family and friends. “For others, Christmas can be a painful reminder of someone they’ve lost, particularly if that person took their own life. “Whatever they are struggling with, we want everyone to know that our crisis call centre volunteers will be there every day of the festive season, including Christmas Day. “We hope that the Lifeline WA Christmas tree is a reminder for people that help is available.” The tree is adorned with about 47,000 lights to represent the number of calls from West Australians that Lifeline WA aims to answer by the end of next financial year. The tree stands 15.5 metres tall and 7.5 metres wide, and takes around 25 people three days to put up and decorate. A function to launch this year’s ‘Lights for Lifeline - powered by Synergy’ campaign will be held around the base of the tree on 14 November, where guests will watch the tree being lit up.
