Rockingham is the first community to be offered a series of workshops by Lifeline WA, which will work with young people and their community, to develop the skills and knowledge to talk about suicide.

Lifeline WA is reaching out to local communities which have been affected by high rates of suicide, with Rockingham identified as a vulnerable community because of the cluster of suicides of young people in recent years.

Following a successful information night at the PCYC Rockingham on August 2, Lifeline WA is running a series of talks and workshops, which are open to anyone in the community who would like to know more about preventing suicide.

Lifeline WA CEO Lorna MacGregor said suicide was the leading cause of death for West Australians aged between 15 and 44, so it was crucial for people to be aware of the warning signs.

“In 2015, 59 young people aged between 5 and 17 died by suicide in Western Australia,” she said.

“It is absolutely tragic that young people can see no other option to ending their pain other than taking their own lives.

“Suicide is preventable, and we need to give parents, young people and community members the tools to enable them to start conversations that could ultimately save a life.”

Lifeline WA will offer three types of workshops; the 90 minute suicideTALK, half day safeTALK and two day ASIST workshop.

Topics covered in the workshops will include reducing stigmas associated with suicide, recognising signs of suicidal thoughts, how to start conversations with young people about suicide and what services are available to prevent suicide.
