Nathan Wright Fortescue Walk for Hope

Posted on 19 September 2011

Two ordinary men on one extraordinary journey – Walking from Carnarvon to Perth for suicide prevention

Dave Wright, an employee of mining giant Fortescue, will embark on a personal journey this Wednesday; walking from Carnarvon to Perth to raise vital funds and awareness for suicide prevention among the rural, remote and resource sectors of Western
Australia’s northwest.

The Nathan Wright Fortescue Walk for Hope is in memory of Dave’s son who took his own life three days before his 21st birthday in March 2009. Leaving at 7am from the IGA carpark in Carnarvon, Dave and his wing-man Simon will begin the long journey through rural towns of the north, bringing a message of hope and help.

Whilst on the 32 day expedition Dave will be supported by Lifeline WA and will be encouraging people to learn more about the issue of suicide and what can be done to prevent it.

‘I want people to know that help is at hand and where there is help there is hope. There is a lot of ignorance in the community about suicide and this contributes to stigma that stops people from getting the support they deserve. There needs to be a better understanding of what we can all do to keep ourselves and the people we love safe from suicide. I am determined that more people know about the 13 11 14 crisis line and I want to raise funds that will get Lifeline’s awareness raising and education programs into regional areas’ said Dave.

Lifeline WA CEO, Amanda Wheeler said ‘Lifeline WA is proud to be a part of the Nathan Wright Fortescue Walk for Hope and to support Dave in his quest to increase the community and individual alertness to people at risk of suicde and how they can be supported. By proudly stepping out for this cause, Dave will rebuke the stigma associated with suicide and in so doing, will address one of the major barriers for people in distress getting support. Dave’s journey is courageous and inspiring. We are with him every step of the way.

The walk will take Dave and Simon from Carnarvon, through Hamelin Pool, Eurardy, Northampton, Geraldton, Dongara, Eneabba, Badgingarra, Muchea, Bullsbrook, Midland and finishing in Perth. Many community groups and local businesses, such as IGA and Hertz, have thrown their support behind Dave and his team of supporters. Throughout his journey Dave will tell his story and educate people on the importance of reaching out to a mate in need or accepting help when it is offered .There is little doubt, that this action alone will save lives.

‘Its not what you expect out of life; watching a normal happy-go-lucky kid change into a moody, sometimes angry, and frustrated young man,’ Dave’s wife, Collette Wright says. ‘Like most parents you think it’s just an age thing or a stage they’re going through. How little did we know. There’s so much to tell and we will make sure our story is told. It can happen to us all.’

To support Dave and Simon in The Nathan Wright Fortescue Walk for Hope head to www.walkforhope.org.au

[Rumour has it that Dave and Simon are also looking for quirky challenges along the way to raise extra funds and keep them entertained. Jump onto the website with your quirky ideas and set a challenge for the boys.]

iiNet announced as naming sponsor of Black Diamond Ball

Posted on 8 July 2011

Lifeline WA and Perth based Internet Service Provider, iiNet, have joined forces to raise awareness and vital funds for West Australians in need at the inaugural iiNet Black Diamond Ball on Saturday, 16 July.

The event, which is sponsored by iiNet, is one of Lifeline WA’s biggest fundraisers of the year and will generate funds to expand the organisation’s community education programs and train more telephone counsellors.

Lifeline CEO Amanda Wheeler said increased demand on its services made fundraising initiatives like the iiNet Black Diamond Ball more important than ever.

“Each year, more than 45,000 West Australians call our crisis support line and, with more people dying from suicide than on our roads, it’s crucial we’re able to answer each and every call we receive,” Ms Wheeler said.

“iiNet was the first telecommunications provider in Australia to make access to crisis telephone counseling services free of charge for their customers. Their sponsorship of the Black Diamond Ball takes our partnership one step further and it will greatly contribute to the success of the event.”

Anthony Fisk, Communications Manager at iiNet, said the Internet service provider is very proud of its association with Lifeline WA.
“Both Lifeline WA and iiNet are all about connecting people and we’re passionate about helping them connect those in the community that may be in crisis with help,” Mr Fisk said.

“The iiNet Black Diamond Ball is going to be bigger and better than ever and I urge everyone to get behind this great cause and enjoy a great night out.”

The iiNet Black Diamond Ball is on Saturday 16 July 2011 at Perth’s Convention and Exhibition Centre. Tickets are $225 per person or $3750 for a Diamond Table. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.blackdiamondball.com.au

Telstra announces free calls to 13 11 14

Posted on 10 May 2011

Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line is now more accessible than ever, following an announcement from Telstra today.

Making calls to Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line will now be free of charge on both prepaid and post paid Telstra mobile phones, as well as the 19,000 Telstra payphones around Australia. Almost one third of calls to Lifeline come from mobile phones, pushing the telecommunication industry to take action today.

With the 13 11 14 24/7 crisis support line now more accessible, National Volunteer Week is a timely reminder that increased demand creates the need for increased capacity. All telephone counsellors are volunteers themselves, answering around 120 calls a year, 10 of which are likely to be from someone at high risk of suicide.

“National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise and thank these incredible people for their work, as well as encourage others to become volunteers, allowing us to expand our service delivery” Lifeline CEO Amanda Wheeler said today. ‘Almost 45,000 West Australians call the 13 11 14 service every year and more volunteers are needed in both telephone counselling and at fundraising events to maintain and expand this service’.

Lifeline WA intends to use the recent one off grant of $500,000 from the government to fund the training of new volunteers in telephone counselling.

‘‘Just about anyone can be part of the Lifeline family, and people don’t have to be on the phones to help out. We need people to help raise funds, work in retail outlets, help out at book fairs, drive trucks, sort clothes, the list goes on.’

Volunteers are an integral part of the Australian community. There are currently over five million volunteers in Australia, with over 700 million hours being contributed every year.

The theme for National Volunteer Week this year is ‘Inspiring the Volunteer in You’ and Lifeline WA would like to ‘Inspire the Volunteer’ in the West Australian community with this appeal.

“It is so important that we recognise the significant contribution that volunteers make to the Australian community. At Lifeline WA, we are extremely proud of our volunteers who selflessly give their time to help others. Our volunteers’ hard work has enabled us to provide crisis support services to the Australian community.’’

There is an information session on becoming a Lifeline Telephone Counsellor on June 8. For more information on any of the volunteering opportunities above please contact (08) 9261 4444.

Lifeline WA thanks Bankwest

Posted on 8 February 2011

Lifeline WA would like to thank Bankwest for their generous donation, acknowledging the important contribution Lifeline’s 13 11 14 service has made to people in distress during the flood, fire and cyclone disasters.

Over the last month Lifeline WA has made a significant effort to increase the number of shifts taken by Lifeline volunteer telephone counsellors to support their fellow Australians in their emotional distress and trauma. Bankwest’s donation which will enable more telephone counsellors to be trained to cope with the constant demand placed on the 13 11 14 service. It is anticipated that Lifeline will receive an increase in calls from people affected by the recent bush fires.

It is hard times like those currently faced by our fellow Australians that remind us of the importance of the 13 11 14 service. No one should have to face their problems alone. If you or someone you know is in emotional distress please call 13 11 14.
