HelpMe Campaign
Launched on 30 July 2010, Lifeline WA’s HelpMe Campaign aims to inspire people in distress to seek and accept help and, those who are around them, to reach out in support.
Lifeline WA believes that by addressing the stigma associated with mental illness and raising community awareness about what can be done to keep people safe from suicide, more people will receive the care they need, when they need it. The HelpMe Campaign will connect people with care through the 13 11 14 telephone crisis support service and will educate the community on how to recognise and respond to a person at risk.
Campaign Objectives
To keep people safe from suicide and to increase opportunities for emotional wellbeing by;
- addressing the barrier presented by the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide.
- inspiring help seeking and accepting behaviour in vulnerable people.
- educating people as to what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.
- raising awareness of where people can go for immediate crisis support and help; highlighting the value of Lifeline’s 13 11 14 telephone crisis support service.
- strengthening the capacity and accessibility of Lifeline WA services.
- creating opportunities for people to actively support the messages and activity of the HelpMe Campaign.
The Philosophies and Attitudes that Underpin the Campaign
Most suicidal people don’t want to die they just want their emotional pain to stop they often endure a period of ambivalence; where they are not sure whether they want to live or die…it is during this period they can be saved.
The social stigma associated with mental health and suicide is a very real and present barrier to help seeking, help accepting and help giving.
Many people simply do not know where to go to get help.
People have the capacity to reduce the risk of suicide but are ignorant to their role – awareness, education and information can address this.
13 11 14 is the first point of call for people in crisis – as a means to assisting with acute emotional distress and as a referral to after care……more people need to know about this.
