About Volunteering with Lifeline WA              

Who is Lifeline WA?

Lifeline WA is a non profit organisation dedicated to providing life-affirming serves to Western Australians. These include our 24 hour telephone counselling line, face-to-face counselling for individuals, couples and families, a dedicated support program for single fathers, our LivingWorks Suicide Intervention Program and a referral services for those who require material aid. With only a small handful of paid staff, we are supported by nearly 500 volunteers who dedicate themselves to improving the quality of life for those less fortunate.

Why become a volunteer?

Upon reliable and satisfactory performance, you will receive a good reference from your supervisor or manager.

By working as an ongoing volunteer, you can further develop your skills and gain sufficient work experience which will make you competitive in the job market.

Why Not Try Single Event Volunteering?

Volunteer Position Descriptions:

Administrative Assistant – Education Services

The Lifeline Education Services is aimed at raising suicide awareness in our community, and providing participants with skills and knowledge that are vital when supporting those at risk.

We are seeking a mature, dedicated, enthusiastic and professional Admin Assistant. The successful candidate will provide customer service and administrative support to the Manager, Education Services. Duties will include data entry, as well as handling queries over the telephone. Although one to two days per week would be ideal, we are willing to provide working arrangements to suit the needs of the volunteer.

Ideally, the successful candidate should possess the following attributes:

Excellent telephone manner and commitment to quality customer service
A desire to work in the not for profit sector
Must be honest and reliable
Display enthusiasm and a positive attitude
Work independently with minimal supervision
Computer literate
Ability to perform general office duties, such as filing, photocopying, mail and banking

Human Resource Assistant

We are seeking the services of a mature, professional, enthusiastic, dedicated and reliable ongoing volunteer to join our small team for two days per week (or equivalent in half days). Reporting directly to the Assistant Manager Human Resource Services, you will perform a variety of duties, including inductions, exit interviews, Occupational Health & Safety, Internet research, preparing monthly reports, and administrative work. This role would suit a person pursuing a career in the HR field, who would like to increase their employment prospects through hands on experience. The successful candidate will display the following attributes:

Relevant degree level qualifications, or currently working towards the attainment of qualifications (postgraduate students also welcome to apply)
Excellent telephone manner and face-to-face communication skills
Mature, patient and tolerant attitude towards a variety of customers
A willingness and capacity to embrace the mission and values of Lifeline WA
Punctual, reliable when performing duties and attending work
Can work independently and as part of a team with the ability to consider the needs of others as well as the needs of the organisation
Professional attitude
Sound written skills, including attention to detail

Receptionists

We are looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and highly motivated ongoing volunteers to work one full day per week on our Reception Team. You will be the first point of contact for our clients and visitors. Duties include handling incoming telephone calls, message taking, greeting clients and visitors, directing them to appointments, as well as general office duties. If you enjoy working with people, then you will thrive in this role. The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

Excellent telephone manner
Ability to communicate effectively with clients face-to-face.
Posess a mature and tolerant attitude towards a diverse range of clients, including those who are emotionally sensitive.
Fluent in English
Is willing and able to uphold the organisation’s Mission Vision and Values.
Can display honesty and integrity.
Able to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.
Attention to detail when taking messages.
Be punctual and reliable when attending work and performing duties.
Possess sound office skills including email, Internet, message taking, photocopying and word processing.

Retail and Warehouse Assistants

Our retail outlet located in Kelmscott (opposite Sherwood Train Station), is looking for reliable, dedicated, and enthusiastic ongoing volunteers who would like to pursue a career in the retail and/or logistics industries. This role will be ideal for those who enjoy performing a wide variety of tasks in a busy environment. Reporting to the Retail Manager , your duties will include serving customers, sorting, packing/unpacking and displaying merchandise, stocktaking and inventory, as well as rag cutting.

In addition, there are positions available to candidates with a driver’s license or forklift license. These positions will assist the Retail Manager (vans are provided). Successful candidates will display the following attributes:

Excellent face-to-face communication skills
A mature, patient and tolerant attitude towards a variety of customers
Honesty and Integrity
Able to perform a variety of tasks in a retail and warehouse environment
Can follow directions from supervisors and learn new skills
Work independently and as part of a team
Display a positive attitude and good work ethic

Desirable
Knowledge and/or experience in a similar environment

Cleaner

The key role would be to maintain the cleanliness of the Lifeline WA Head Office to a high standard.

This would include:

The vacuuming of rooms and corridors and emptying all waste bins
Cleaning areas as assigned
Report anything in need of repair or replacement to the appropriate person
Maintain polite and good communication with you colleagues and residents at all time

Telephone Counsellors

Our 24/7 Telephone Counselling Call Centres (located in Perth, Murdoch, Subiaco and Peel) are leading providers of Crisis Telephone Counselling to West Australians in need. We are looking for mature, dedicated and highly motivated people to join our friendly team. Reporting to the Supervisor, successful candidates will be committed to the delivery of quality telephone counselling on an ongoing basis for a few hours per week. To be successful in this role you will be a people person who is willing to go that extra mile to ensure that our clients receive the very best support. Our ideal candidates will have the following attributes:

Excellent telephone communication skills
Display a high level of patience and tolerance towards a variety of clients, especially those in crisis
Sound understanding of privacy and confidentiality issues
Working independently and as part of a team
Willing to accept coaching and feedback from supervisors
Can be punctual and reliable when performing duties and attending work

Lifeline WA provides the following benefits to Telephone Counsellors:

A nationally recognised qualification (Certificate IV in Telephone Counselling Skills), which can lead to Recognition of Prior Learning for other recognised qualifications as well as attaining memberships to professional bodies
