Education Services

Education Services provides training workshops and seminars that aim to make ours a ‘suicide safer community’. Current programs include Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), SafeTALK, SuicideTALK and Counselling the Bereaved. We also deliver professional development workshops such as "Moving On" and "Working Effectively".

Please select one of the courses below to download further information:

ASIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
ASIST is a 2-day, highly interactive workshop that provides participants with the practical skills to identify when someone is at risk of suicide and know how to competently intervene. That is how to apply ‘suicide first-aid’. Anyone in the community can learn ’suicide first aid’. In fact, anyone who cares about their family, friends, work colleagues and other community members, will benefit from the training.

ASIST Tune-Up
A new full day workshop for caregivers who have completed training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training more than 6 months ago. This new workshop reviews your learning from ASIST to reconfirm your ability to be willing, ready and able to successfully intervene when someone is at risk of suicide. Available only for caregivers who have completed ASIST.

SafeTALK can be organised at a time suitable for your organisation or community group. It is best used in conjunction with some organisation members being fully skilled in ASIST to provide a “whole of community” response to suicide risk.

SuicideTALK
A new half day workshop for caregivers and members of the community providing awareness of suicide issues and some basic skills in suicide first aid.
Counselling The Bereaved Workshop
A full day workshop for caregivers and members of the community concentrating on the issue of grief and loss as a result of loss including loss of job, loss of child or divorce.

Moving On A half day workshop for telephone workers in call centres or public contact roles, teaching them to
identify calls they find stressful and difficult and what strategies they can use to deal with the their
emotional responses to these calls

Working Effectively
A one day workshop for workers in public contact roles responding to people who are sometimes quite
distressed and may either become angry and aggressive, or talk about the possibility of suicide or
homicide. The workshop covers how to manage these interactions in role appropriate effective ways,
exploring appropriate role boundaries and issues related to risk assessment and the process for followup debriefing and support.

Participant Quotes:

"I didn't realise the continuing (bereavement) impact on those left behind, that a suicidal death has, compared with a death thru accident or "natural causes". It appears, although there are some similarities in the pain experienced, a death by suicide appears to have an additional dimension that is beyond any comparison. I needed to understand that dimension. Thanks for the course." Kerry, Goldfields Workshop Participant

"I am better able to recognise those at risk and have the confidence to know what to say and do next". Carol - Workshop participant

"I attended the workshop towards the end of November and between the workshop and Christmas Day, I used the skills 5 times". Peter - Workshop participant

"The workshop has heightened my awareness and now I realise that many of my clients were sending out signals all the time, I just didn't know how to react and how to help". Lyn - Workshop participant
