Being a Dad

A dad is a man who has children he helps to raise.
A dad does things that are good for his children that help them grow towards a healthy personal life and relationships.

A dad is a role model.
He demonstrates to his sons how a man lives in the world.
He demonstrates to his sons how to treat women and girls in the world.
He demonstrates to his wife and daughters how a man lives in the world.
He demonstrates to his daughters what she should expect of men in the world.
He does all these things in an appropriate and respectful manner always mindful of all people’s right for equality.

Sometimes a dad excels at being a dad, sometimes he is just a dad, and sometimes he falls short of his own expectations. The measure of the man is in how he responds to these and other life instances next time.

For his child
A dad provide:
  Love
  Care
  Protection
  Nurturing
  Guidance
  Example
  Support

A dad feels:
  Love
  Pride
  Excitement
  Fear
  Sadness
  Guilt
  Useless

A dad wants to:
  Protect
  Instruct
  Teach

Being a dad is not easy BUT it is always a challenge.
The love for your child or children comes naturally BUT a man is not born with the skills and knowledge necessary to be a dad.
He learns these from observing as he grows up and the mistakes he makes as a dad BUT this is often not enough.

As children grow a dad has to adapt and change as well.

There are times when a dad knows he has done well as a dad.
There are times when a dad knows he has stuffed up as a dad.
There are times when a dad does not know what to do.
